Many, many years ago" (Janowski's words) the great Polish-born German conductor Marek Janowski quit the opera house pit forever and when conducting opera since then has conducted it only in concert performance. His reason? The rise and current dominance of Konzept Regietheater stagings both in Germany and worldwide, a development Maestro Janowski simply cannot (refuses to) accept. Following is a deeply interesting and hugely informative YouTube video of an interview with Maestro Janowski by music critic Igor Toronyi-Lalic for the magazine Gramophone wherein Maestro Janowski speaks at length about the matter and by coincidence provides as well an eloquent validation of the ideas expressed in our recent S&F entry "The Death Of Opera". The video is well worth viewing in full (some 50 minutes) by everyone with any interest in opera.
