Wolfgang Wagner, grandson of Richard Wagner and longtime director of the Bayreuther Festspiele, is dead at 90 reports Spiegel Online. The death was announced some two hours ago by Festspiele spokesman Peter Emmerich. Wolfgang's daughter, Katharina Wagner, since September 2008 co-director of the Festspiele with her half-sister Eva Wagner-Pasquier, said he died peacefully in his sleep late Sunday night at his home in Bayreuth. More on Wolfgang to follow on S&F (see here (added 3/22)).
Update (10:54 AM Eastern on 22 Mar): For the essential background on Wolfgang, this Guardian obituary is better than most floating around out there. Nothing (yet) from The New York Times beyond the ubiquitous AP obit picked up by most U.S. dailies.
