It's no surprise, I suppose, that the relentlessly leftist Harper's Magazine saw fit to publish this article by one, Kevin Baker, that mindlessly and ignorantly insists on limning current American nationalism — which Mr. Baker presumes to be in the hands of the American right-wing — in terms of Wagner's Götterdämmerung (which the clueless author wrongly titles, Die Götterdämmerung). I reprint below my 15 July Letter To The Editor response to that article.
To The Editor:
I guess congratulations of a kind are due your Mr. Kevin Baker for giving to Wagner's _Ring_, and specifically to _Götterdämmerung_, a reading in perfect conformance with the reading given both by the Nazis for propaganda purposes. Needless to say — or, rather, it ought to be needless to say — the reading the Nazis and Mr. Baker assigned to Wagner's great masterpiece has nothing in common, or anything whatsoever to do, with what Wagner wrote or intended. Mr. Baker's _Ring_ references are also in perfect conformance with the imbecile pop conception of Wagner and his works, and ought not to have been given the credence publication in a journal such as _Harper's_ implicitly bestows upon it.
I'd be willing to bet, giving odds, that letter never sees the light of day in Harper's.
