To regular readers of this blog my occasional outbursts of antipathy for and otherwise general indifference toward singers is well known, certain exceptions noted. That notwithstanding, it was with a large measure of sadness I read of the death yesterday of mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson from the ravages of cancer at the age of only 52. Even my brief and narrow acquaintance with her recorded output told me she was not only extraordinary vocally, but a first-rate musician into the bargain, a combination all too rarely met with, and certain to be sorely missed. An informed obituary may be read here, and a charming personal remembrance here.
Update (2:58 AM Eastern on 5 Jul): NYT obituary is here.
Update 2 (11:11 AM Eastern on 6 Jul): And here's a reprint of an interview with Ms. Hunt-Lieberson by James Reel of KUAT-FM Blog conducted some two years ago. Its at that time innocent first graf makes for heart-sinking, heart-wrenching reading today.

It's The Music, Stupid!
