People who believe in the Devil are either too much horrified by their belief to tolerate the slightest mention of him, or they find a naughty thrill in playing with their superstition. On the whole, a belief in the Devil is a superstition which is likely to survive, and even to flourish, when all other capacity for belief is exhausted. It is so very easy to live up to.
Sir Donald Francis Tovey (1875-1940)
